Workplace English Campaign



 

OVERVIEW

To enhance Hong Kong’s competitiveness as an international centre for business, finance and tourism, the Government launched the Workplace English Campaign (WEC) in the year 2000 to heighten public awareness of the importance of having a good command of English in a workplace environment and to improve the knowledge of English among the working population in Hong Kong. 

Funding for the Campaign is provided by the Language Fund with the support of the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR)

The key components of the Campaign are:  

l            Hong Kong Workplace English Benchmarks for the following job types:

                    Clerks

                    Executives/ Administrators/ Associate Professionals

                    Frontline Service Personnel

                    Low Proficiency Job Types

                    Receptionists/ Telephone Operators

                    Secretaries

l       Funding Scheme for Workplace English Training whereby employees will be subsidized to attain the relevant benchmarks for their job types.
