To enhance Hong Kong’s competitiveness as an international
centre for business, finance and tourism, the Government
launched the Workplace English Campaign (WEC) in the year 2000
to heighten public awareness of the importance of having a good
command of English in a workplace environment and to improve the
knowledge of English among the working population in Hong Kong.
The Campaign promotes the
Hong Kong Workplace English Benchmarks (HKWEB) which spell
out the standards of English in writing and speaking that
employees of different industries in Hong Kong should strive to
attain; and carries out a large-scale
public
education and
publicity programme annually.
Funding for the Campaign is provided by the Language Fund
with the support of the
Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR).
