FINDINGS
1. Tourists Staying in Registered Accommodation in Yangshuo
1.1 Tourist Volume
After the all time high of 200,000 tourists registered last
year, the growth trend from 160,000 tourists of 1993 took a
downturn this year and is expected to hit the bottom of 140,000
tourists in 2003.
The flow of tourists is believed to pick up its momentum again
from 2004, with tourist flow to increase 7% to 150,000 tourists.
By 2008, the tourists figure is expected to reach 170,000 after
a gradual growth of four years.
1.2 Market Segments
During the sixteen years under study, two developments on the
changes of the market segments can be observed. These are the
reducing number of tourists from the Asian region and the
increasing patronage from the rest of the world. This is
particularly so in the year 2002 in which Asian tourists only
accounts for about one fourth of the patronage, while tourists
from the rest of the world accounts for a half of the year's
total of 140,000 tourists.
In 1998 and before, Asian tourists accounted for one third of
the patronage, enjoying the same percentage as another two major
groups of tourists from the domestic and the rest of the world.
However, the declining percentage of the Asian tourists is
expected to improve gradually from 2004.
