Workplace English Campaign launches
learning programme to support EAG
In support of the Hong Kong 2009 East Asian
Games (EAG), the Workplace English Campaign (WEC) is launching
a radio announcement in the public interest (API) and a series
of radio and video programmes titled “Hong Kong Welcomes You”
to encourage Hong Kong people to improve their English
proficiency in order to welcome athletes and tourists to the
EAG.
The radio API, which features artistes Ivana
Wong and Eric Suen, will be broadcast on Chinese radio
channels starting from tomorrow (October 12).
The radio and video series, produced by RTHK
with sponsorship from the WEC, introduces some English phrases
and vocabulary commonly used in receiving overseas visitors.
Hosted by RTHK DJs Ms Gloria Lo and Melissa
Cheung, Language Instructor of the Hong Kong Polytechnic
University Ms Venny Lai and native English speaker Ms Laura
Shepherd, the series will be rolled out in phases as follows:

Twenty episodes of two-minute radio
segments will be broadcast on RTHK Radio 1 from 1:00 p.m.
to 3:00 p.m., and 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., from Monday to
Friday between October 26 and November 20;

Four episodes of half-hourly radio
programmes, edited from the above radio segments, will be
broadcast on RTHK Radio 1 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on
every Sunday between November 22 and December 13;

Twenty episodes of one-minute videos will
be broadcast on the Internet starting from November 22
with access through the WEC online self-learning platform
at www.english.gov.hk/platform. |

Launched by the Government in 2000, WEC
aims to enhance public awareness of the importance of having a
good command of English in the workplace and to improve
language skills among the working population in Hong Kong.
